With Justin Trudeau leaving the position of Canada’s Prime Minister, the country is now at a new stage. His resignation marks the end of nearly a decade of leadership that was characterized by bold immigration initiatives and global humanitarian efforts.
However, his tenure was also highly criticized, especially in terms of economic challenges and strained public services. Now, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre stands out as the leading contender to shape Canada’s future, promising significant changes, especially in immigration policy.
Justin Trudeau Quits as Canada’s Prime Minister But Leaves Behind Immigration Legacy
During Trudeau, Canada set aggressive immigration targets. The country planned to accept more than 500,000 permanent residents every year by 2025. The policies were designed to address labor shortages and offset an aging population. Critics argue that the influx was too fast for housing, healthcare, and public infrastructure, leading to growing dissatisfaction among Canadians, including members of the Indian-Canadian community.
Suraj Subhadarshee, a Toronto-based tech strategist, called Trudeau’s resignation “bittersweet.” He acknowledged the former Prime Minister’s good intentions but pointed out that “uncontrolled immigration, combined with government sanctions, created challenges that couldn’t be sustained.”
Some Indian Canadians view the resignation positively. “The economic setbacks caused by poor policies affected families deeply,” said a tech analyst who preferred anonymity. Others believe stricter immigration policies are necessary for Canada’s long-term stability.
India-Canada Relations: A Tense Bond
Trudeau’s exit has brought questions about India-Canada relations, which have been at a historic low. Diplomatic relations got strained following allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. India rejected the charges as unfounded, which led to diplomatic friction and trouble for immigrants and families with families across the border.
Indian-Canadian professionals hope that new leadership can mend these strained relations. “Pierre Poilievre may bring a new approach to heal this schism,” said Subhadarshee. Stricter immigration policies could balance fairness with sustainability and stronger international alliances.
A Conservative Vision for Canada
He does promise that with his emergence, priorities shift. Poilievre criticizes Trudeau for a “radical, out-of-control” immigration strategy by arguing for rates that match the available supply of resources- such as homes and healthcare facilities.
“I was in one of his backroom caucuses. He is a pragmatist, looking forward to long-term remedies. It is time we gave the Conservatives an opportunity,” he said.
Poilievre’s solutions include immigration and housing development at a faster rate to alleviate Canada’s worsening housing crisis. Other policies of Poilievre may include a preference for skilled workers, filling up labor gaps, and cutting down on family reunification and refugee quotas.
What is Ahead for Canada
As Canada prepares to enter a phase of potential change in leadership, hope and apprehension are intertwined. Immigration, in fact, has been an emblem of the leadership of Mr. Trudeau through resettling Syrians and supporting the Ukrainian asylum seekers with emergency travel programs. In fact, behind the humanitarian move lay the overstraining infrastructure of the country.
Poilievre’s promise to overhaul immigration might bring in a new balance. It remains to be seen if that shift leads to economic recovery or more debate. For many Canadians, his leadership marks an opportunity for stability and rebalancing.
“If you want to live the Canadian dream, you have to earn it, not buy it,” remarks one Indian-Canadian.
