King Charles III shared a sweet childhood memory about his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Speaking about her 1953 coronation, Charles recalled how Elizabeth would sometimes wear a coronation crown during his bath time. “She practiced wearing the crown to get used to its weight,” he said, adding that the moments remain vivid in his memory.
Charles, who was then only four years old during the coronation crown ceremony of Elizabeth, remembered the excited wait for the grand event. He recalled this while on a tour of Buckingham Palace with a group of Canadian women who had attended the Queen’s coronation when they were teenagers. He even joked that the crown-wearing tradition was not even excluded from the light-hearted bath time with him and his sister.

The monarch admitted to feeling “slightly anxious” about wearing the St. Edward’s Crown at his own coronation earlier this year. “It weighs 5 pounds and is much taller,” he noted, emphasizing the challenge of balancing the historic piece. Both Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III eventually switched to the lighter Imperial State Crown after their respective ceremonies.
While reminiscing about Elizabeth’s coronation crown, Charles also joked about the haircut he received as a child in preparation for the event. “What the barber did to me, I’ll never forget,” he quipped, sharing a lighter side of the otherwise formal occasion.
These reflections form part of the new documentary Coronation Girls, in which the story of 50 Canadian women who attended the late Queen’s coronation is told. The women, now in their 80s, recently met in London for a reunion that brought back their memories of the past. Their individual journey to and fro and their interesting stories about professors, activists, and even a nun are shown in the film.
As King reminisced of these times, Elizabeth’s coronation crown became once more a symbol of history, family, and tradition.
