President Donald Trump is considering creating a new commission to audit government programs in a bid to show where budget cuts could be made. In the possible move, Trump considers Elon for a role in auditing U.S. agencies to root out what he calls “stupid” regulations that waste money and keep businesses from hiring.
Elon Musk, Chief Executive of Tesla and SpaceX, has shown interest in participating in this “government efficiency commission.” He has used his social media platform X, formerly named Twitter, to boast about what he could bring to the project, even going so far as to post an AI-generated picture of himself at the fictional “Department of Government Efficiency,” humorously abbreviated as “DOGE”- a reference to a meme cryptocurrency he supports. The photo below underlines Musk’s endorsement of the idea as Trump considers Elon for role in auditing U.S. agencies.
While Musk’s input may bring new insights, ethics experts are sounding the alarm. Musk’s sprawling business empire could create a number of conflicts of interest for him in an official capacity reviewing federal spending. Yet Trump’s aides are reportedly eager to bring prominent private sector executives like Musk into the fold. The proposal is not entirely unprecedented-or dissimilar from the efforts of previous Republicans-to cut government spending-as championed by former President Ronald Reagan and Senator Tom Coburn.
Trump considers Elon for a role in auditing U.S. agencies, but certainly not as a Cabinet Member
Trump has hinted that Musk can be an advisor, but not a Cabinet member. The decision is in respect to the responsibilities he already has with his companies. That would be in line with the big picture as Trump considers Elon for a role in auditing U.S. agencies without impeding his main duties. It would be interesting to see how an alliance would work between them.
Musk went from endorsing President Joe Biden during the 2020 election to Trump. He has been quite active in regard to political discourse. Also, he went so far as to create a SuperPAC looking to support Trump. It can signal a progressive alignment with Trump’s policy initiatives.
Other contenders are said to include Fred Smith, former chief executive of FedEx, and Robert Nardelli, former chief executive of Home Depot. A final decision on the composition of the commission has not been made-a. Hence, it leaves speculation about how this new development might reshape government oversight.
