At least 150 flights operated by India’s largest airline, IndiGo, were canceled on Wednesday, and many others were delayed, according to airport sources. This left thousands of travelers stranded and led to many complaints on social media.
IndiGo airlines face pilot shortages and delays
Three airport sources and an IndiGo pilot reported that the airline is experiencing a pilot shortage. New government rules aimed at reducing fatigue and increasing rest periods for pilots took effect on July 1 and November 1, making it harder to manage schedules.
IndiGo said that its operations have faced “significant disruptions” over the past two days. The airline cited unexpected problems, including bad weather and higher congestion, along with the new crew rostering rules set by the Indian government.
6 flights cancelled
These issues caused long delays at major airports in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. “The 6 pm flight is delayed by two hours, and even that gate has changed four times,” said Rakesh Bhanushali, a chartered accountant from Mumbai, who was supposed to fly on Tuesday.
“We are relying on staff completely. The staff are cooperating, but they honestly say they don’t know what’s happening.” A spokesperson for Bengaluru airport mentioned that 62 IndiGo flights were canceled on Wednesday.
The Indian government aims to grow the aviation sector to support broader development goals. However, the recent disruptions highlight the difficulties the government faces in balancing airline needs with pilot welfare.
