Gautam Adani talks about Mundra, home to India's largest port: Here are his shocking remarks

On Teachers’ Day, Gautam Adani addresses students at Jai Hind College in Mumbai about his journey as an entrepreneur. He spoke about how Mundra, home to India’s largest port, has grown and developed over time. He said it is bright with its big achievements because Mundra Port, also the biggest special economic zone, is utilized to only 10% of its potential.

As Adani talks about Mundra, he uses the term “karmabhoomi” where his dream became a reality. Mundra, home to India’s largest port is a prove of the sprawling infrastructure that has come up. Urging them to chase their dreams, he shared with them his philosophy which reads:

Mundra became my karmabhoomi and made my vision a reality, a powerful testimony to the fact what you dream, you create, and what you think, you become.”

In 1995, the Gujarat government announced a port-led industrial development scheme through public-private participation. It laid the groundwork for Adani’s businesses. Being approached by global commodities trader Cargill “to partner in sourcing and manufacturing salt from Kutch”, he outlines that this salt partnership did not come through. However, he ended up buying 40,000 acres of marshy land at Mundra. While others would have seen only sand, he saw potential. For him, it was transformational opportunity to take control of the future of the region.

Home to India’s largest port is well-crafted with these facilities

notably, the first major project that took place at home to India’s largest port was the captive jetty for salt export. Today, Mundra boasts India’s largest commercial port with deep draft and all-around facilities. It is efficiently handling the largest bulk carriers in the world. Adani talks about Mundra emphasizing how it is equipped with sprawling infrastructure. A few to enlist are covered and open storage areas, seamless cargo evacuation and receiving facilities, and India’s largest container terminal.

Besides, Mundra has India’s largest thermal power plant and the biggest solar manufacturing facility. Also, it has a largest copper plant, and also India’s biggest edible oil refinery. Furthermore, Adani focused on how integrated business models at Mundra had challenged the Western focus on core competencies. He added,

“And yet, we’re only about 10 per cent of what Mundra will eventually become. It stands as a living monument to the power of integrated business models and the strategic value of adjacencies, challenging the very concept of core competencies that the West advocates,”
