Bangladesh Student Boasts of 2024 Hindu Officer's Lynching in Police Station Video

A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage after a Bangladesh youth leader boasted about killing a Hindu police officer and threatened law enforcement officials during what he called the July 2024 uprising.

The video was shared on X by investigative journalist Sahidul Hasan Khokon, who identified the speaker as a student coordinator from Habiganj district. In the clip, the youth threatens the officer-in-charge of a police station, warning that it set on fire.

He claims that during the so-called “July movement,” the Baniachong police station torched. In a shocking statement, the youth says, “We burned Hindu officer SI Santosh,” referring to Sub-Inspector Santosh Bhabhu. These comments appear to made inside a police station, showing no visible fear or remorse.

The video brought renewed focus on the lynching of SI Santosh Bhabhu, who worked at the Baniachong police station in Habiganj district and killed by a mob on August 5, 2024.

Mob Lynching and Aftermath of SI Santosh Bhabhu’s Death

Reports from the Bangladesh daily Desh Rupantar say that violence erupted that evening when a mob attacked the police station amid rising political tension, just hours before then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned. In what described as self-defense, police, including Santosh Bhabhu, fired to break up the mob, leading to three deaths at the scene and several injuries. One wounded person later died during treatment.

Later that night, around 1 am, the mob allegedly returned and surrounded the police station. When army personnel showed up, the mob reportedly agreed to let all other officers leave if they handed over Santosh Bhabhu. He killed shortly after, around 2:15 am, and his body left on the road until the next day, after which it said to further desecrated.
