The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Harcharan Singh Bhullar, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Ropar Range, Punjab Police, on Thursday in a corruption case related to bribery.
The arrest conducts in the afternoon at his office in Mohali, Punjab. CBI officers caught him accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh after a dealer from Mandi Gobindgarh filed a complaint in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar arrested in Rs 5 Lakh Bribery Case
Bhullar was allegedly extorting a monthly payment of Rs 5 lakh from a scrap dealer in connection with an ongoing case. Along with Bhullar, CBI also took one private individual into custody during the operation.
CBI searched Bhullar’s office, home, and another location. They took the arrested officer briefly to Panchkula in Haryana before bringing him back. The raiding team ensured that no Punjab Police personnel on deputation were involved to keep the process fair.
Clash Between Ropar and Chandigarh Police Over Rajya Sabha Nominee
The arrest of Harcharan Singh Bhullar came a day after a confrontation between the Ropar police and their counterparts in Chandigarh over the arrest of Navneet Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi claimed to be the president of the Janata Party and had filed nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha election from Punjab.
The Ropar police charged Chaturvedi with forgery after several AAP MLAs said he forged their signatures on the nomination papers. When the Ropar police tried to arrest Chaturvedi on Tuesday, the Chandigarh Police refused to hand him over, blocking the arrest.
