The Thiruvananthapuram City police arrested Malayalam film actor Maniyanpilla Raju on Friday. This was in connection with a hit-and-run incident that injured two youths when his car struck their motorcycle late on Thursday night.
Maniyanpilla Raju Arrested in hit and run accident
The police recorded the arrest after Mr. Raju arrived at the Museum police station around 9:30 a.m., nearly 12 hours after the incident occurred, as he was leaving Trivandrum Club in Vazhuthacaud. He later released on station bail following a medical examination at the General Hospital, but the results have not yet been disclosed.
According to the Museum police, the accident happened around 10 p.m. while the actor was allegedly leaving the club after attending a program. The injured individuals are Sooraj, 20, from Sreekandeswaram, and NivedithKrishna, 20, from Sreevaraham.
Case filed under rash driving
The police registered a case under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 125(a) (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They also applied Sections 134(A) (failure to provide emergency medical assistance to the injured) and 134(B) (failure to report the accident to the nearest police station) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Both youths suffered serious injuries to their legs and spines and admitted to private hospitals, where they underwent emergency surgeries. The accident also damaged the actor’s car. The police found a detached number plate and broken bumper parts at the scene. Upon checking, they confirmed the vehicle registered to Sudheer Kumar Raju, the actor’s real name.
When he arrived at the police station, Maniyanpilla Raju said that the motorcycle had hit his car. He admitted that he “panicked” after hearing the crash. He mentioned that he immediately called a friend at the club to report the incident, but acknowledged that leaving the scene without stopping was a mistake.
