Student Shot Dead in Varanasi College Campus
Surya was the 4th semester BA student in Uday Pratap College and killed in college campus and shock the community. The shooting happened around 11 AM in a corridor of the social sciences faculty building. Eyewitnesses reported that a fellow student, Manjeet Chauhan, opened fire at close range. The shooter allegedly fired four rounds, hitting Singh in the head and chest. He then fled to the first floor, jumped a boundary wall, and escaped after discarding the pistol in a nearby garbage dump. Police later found the weapon.
Campus erupts in violence
The killing sparked protests, with angry students locking the main gate and damaging property. Several vehicles were vandalized, and at least three teachers were attacked. One teacher suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital under police protection.
A heavy police presence was deployed as tensions rose. Officers escorted trapped teachers and non-teaching staff off the campus. Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal said that the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute between two students. “Preliminary inquiry suggests the shooting was due to mutual enmity between the students,” Commissioner Agarwal said.
