A shocking case from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, has emerged. Investigators allege that a 24-year-old man chopped off part of his own foot to try to get disability-related concessions for medical admissions under the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
Police identified the man as SurajBhaskar, who lives in Khalipur, an area served by the Line Bazar police station. The incident occurred on January 18, but it only came to light on January 23, while police were looking into what initially seemed like an assault case with false information.
Attempt to obtain the Divyang certificate for NEET Disability quota
According to police, Bhaskar amputated part of his foot to get a Divyang (Person with Disability–PwD) certificate. This certificate can provide concessions during medical admissions, including lower qualifying scores in competitive exams like NEET.
Police said Bhaskar completed a Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) and had been preparing for NEET to pursue an MBBS degree.
Call records with girlfriend reveal plot
An FIR initially filed against unknown persons for attempted murder after Suraj claimed he attacked and left disabled. Circle Officer (City) Goldie Gupta reported that, on January 18, police received information that Suraj assaulted around noon. According to what he initially told authorities, Suraj said he woke up the next morning to find that part of his left foot amputated, leaving only the heel.
Gupta said that, based on Suraj’s statement and written complaint, the police registered an FIR against two unknown individuals and started investigating the supposed assault. However, during the investigation, officers found inconsistencies in Suraj’s account.
“The victim changed his statement and tried to mislead the police,” Gupta said, noting that this behavior raised suspicion among investigators.
