A controversy broke out at a college in Bengaluru when five Brahmin students were reportedly asked to remove their sacred threads (Janeu/Yajnopaveetha) before entering the hall to take the CET (Common Entrance Test) there. This incident occurred on the first day of the exams.
Controversy occurs after Students forced to remove sacred threats in Bengaluru
After parents complained, the police filed an FIR for disturbing communal harmony under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additionally, three professors at the college have been suspended. The investigation into the issue is ongoing.
The BJP criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government over the incident, labeling it “anti-Hindu.” The state government has initiated a probe.
Student explained experience
A student told, “When I went to the examination centre, the teachers made me take out my earring. I understand that because no metal is allowed, but they also forced me to remove my sacred thread.” The student felt they had no choice but to follow the invigilators’ instructions.
After the incident, parents came to the CET centre and questioned the motives behind the actions. They pointed out that there were standing instructions not to remove the sacred thread.
Last year, during a similar controversy, the government stated that the sacred thread would not be removed during the CET. Other students claimed that the red and yellow sacred thread tied around the wrist (Mauli/Kalava) was also taken away by the invigilators.
