Seven years after a railway delay disrupted a teenager’s academic dreams, a consumer disputes redressal commission in Basti, UP, has ordered Indian Railways to pay Rs 9.1 lakh in compensation to the young woman. The ruling states that the railways were directly responsible for the delay that prevented the student from gaining admission to Lucknow University’s BSc biotechnology course.

The legal battle began in 2018. Samriddhi, who was just 17 at the time, left Basti on the morning of May 7 to take the entrance test. Her exam center Jai Narayan PG College in Lucknow, and candidates needed to seated by 12:30 pm.
Govt provides Relief from emotional distress
Samriddhi boarded the Gorakhpur-Lucknow Intercity Superfast Express that supposed to arrive in Basti at 6:55 am and reach Lucknow by 11 am. However, the train arrived in Lucknow two-and-a-half hours late, preventing her from taking the exam.
The commission’s ruling recognizes the emotional distress and lost opportunity caused by the delay.
