The Odisha govt recently announced that it limit working hours for all government, non-government, industrial, and construction sectors from 1 April. This decision comes because temperatures expected to rise in the summer season. It aims to protect outdoor workers from potential heatstroke.
Odisha govt announce limited working hours
The Department of Labour and Employees’ State Insurance issued a notification to all revenue commissioners, district collectors, and the State labour commissioner regarding this change. It states, ” All departments of the Odisha government, along with all central government institutes in Odisha, private employers, commercial and industrial establishments, shop owners, business establishments, and contractors asked to ensure that workers under their supervision not work between 11 AM and 3 PM from April 1 to June 15.”
Aim to keep workers safe from harsh weather
The department has allowed institutions to adjust their working hours to keep workers safe from harsh heat conditions in Odisha.
If any work is urgent or related to essential services, where workers cannot rest during these hours, employers must take precautions to protect them from extreme heat. It also specified that these measures should include providing safe drinking water, shaded resting areas, medical facilities, and ORS packets to every worker. Health department institutions urged to prepare for heat-related issues and provide treatment to affected patients.
