Kangana Ranaut invites Priyanka Gandhi to watch her upcoming film Emergency

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who in the past played bold roles on screen, disclosed she had invited politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to watch her upcoming film, Emergency, when it is released on January 17. The film portrays the 21 months from 1975 to 1977 when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India with a notion of threats to the nation.

Priyanka Gandhi Discusses Dignified Portrayal of Indira Gandhi in Emergency Movie by Kangana Ranaut

Kangana, playing Indira Gandhi, spoke with IANS in an interview. She recalled how she met Priyanka Gandhi in Parliament and told her to watch the film. “She was very gracious,” Kangana said. “She responded, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ I think the film sensitively captures an important chapter of history and portrays Mrs. Gandhi with great dignity.”

The actress highlighted that she tried to change the narrative of Indira Gandhi from her personal life to her political achievements. “I realized that there is a lot of focus on her personal relationships and controversies during my research. But there is much more to her as a person and as a leader,” she added.

Kangana said that it was difficult to capture the complexity of a towering figure in that way. “She was a much-loved leader, no matter how controversial the Emergency was. Turning out to be a three-time prime minister does not come easy.”

A Thoughtful Take on History

The film, according to Kangana, would attempt to probe into the legacy of Indira Gandhi with depth and dignity. “I have taken great care to portray her as a leader and as a woman of substance. This film is not about sensationalism but about understanding the dynamics of that era,” she explained.

As the release date approaches, Emergency is sure to fuel a lot of conversation around one of India’s most debated political chapters.
