This is the season for Christmas movies! While traditional holiday rom-coms and animated classics continue to warm hearts, a new action-packed adventure Red One starring Dwayne Johnson, “The Rock” and Chris Evans offers a fresh twist to your festive watchlist.
Red One, directed by Jumanji filmmaker Jake Kasdan, follows a thrilling Christmas mission. Santa (in excellent shape, the character is played by J.K. Simmons) is lost just before Christmas Eve, and Christmas becomes a total disaster.
His head of security, Callum Jones (Dwayne Johnson), works with hacker-for-hire Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to stop a stolen Santa and save the season. The fun is furthered by Lucy Liu as Zoe, director of the Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority, and a cast including Kiernan Shipka, Nick Kroll, and Kristofer Hivju.
After its November 15 theatrical release, the film performed impressively at the global box office, raking in $165 million. Currently, however, it is released for streaming only on Amazon Prime Video, instantly becoming a must-watch for Prime members. Unfortunately, it is not available on services such as Netflix or Hulu, so Prime members are given access to it.
Red One is another addition to Christmas movies on Disney+
It mixes holiday cheer and action but also contains intense scenes and some strong language, so it is not appropriate for all children. Families looking for kid-centered holidays already have a wealth of Christmas favorites on Disney+.
Despite its star-studded cast and high-octane premise, Red One received mixed reviews. Critics have characterized it as good fun, but not so profound as to be memorable, a Christmas caper. Although it has been welcomed as a fresh addition to the Christmas film library by some, it has also been labeled as just the right choice as a post-dinner viewing option on evenings when a bit of a snooze wasn’t going to spoil the experience.
However, Red One offers a dose of action, humor, and holiday cheer for fans of Johnson and Evans or anybody who fancies themselves a Christmas explorer again. You can get it seeing it at the movie theatre, or watch it on Prime Video right now.
