Maharashtra Government Approves ₹9 Crore Refund to Shah Rukh Khan for Mannat House

Bollywood’s king Shah Rukh Khan is to be reimbursed ₹9 crore by the State of Maharashtra due to a payment error during the process of outright ownership of the sea-front Mannat house built over part of the land originally acquired by Khan. Reimbursement is preceded by a recalculation that detected a fault in the base premium previously applied in the conversion step.

Shah Rukh Khan transferred Mannat House from lease to full ownership, set to get ₹9 crore now

Suburban collector Satish Bagal states that King Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan, at the historic Bandra building transferred the leasehold facility to “class 1 full ownership” in 2019, paying a hefty amount as a premium. There was a table error in the premium determination, the Khans lodged an application to the revenue department which was accepted this week.

Although the amount of the initial premium required has not been officially confirmed, it is reported that the actor paid more than ₹25 crore at that time. After this recalculation, the government then found out that ₹9 crore have been overpaid, therefore issued the refund.

Shah Rukh Khan, also known as the “Baadshah of Bollywood”, is globally famous for his contributions to Hindi films and even acted in more than 100 films and received the Padma Shri award as well as international recognition like the French Legion of Honour. His residence, Mannat, is the focus today of Mumbai fans who represent the global reach of his celebrity and his connection to the Indian diaspora.

This development is of particular significance as a (very) unusual case of the reversal of celebrity status, and strengthens the relevance of transparency in governance and financial honesty. The Khans’ early application for a refund proves them active in coping with this problem.
