Singer-actor Selena Gomez went on Instagram Live to express her feelings over US President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. For a few moments in the video which has since been deleted, she tearfully shared pain in respect of families and children that would be affected by the proposed policy.
In the clip, Gomez appeared visibly distressed in black, saying, “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” She attached the video with “I’m sorry” and a Mexican flag emoji.
Although Selena’s video gained many views after the fan pages re-posted it, she received mixed reactions.
Some praised her empathy, while others criticized her response.
A user said, “It’s not Trump’s immigration law against Mexicans and Latinos. It’s U.S. law against people that enter the country illegally.” Another user wrote, “Her people? She is an American… If she wants to be a Mexican, then go live amongst ‘your people.'”
The backlash forced Gomez to address the criticism through another note on Instagram Stories, where she wrote, “Apparently it’s not okay to show empathy for people.” This post, like the initial video, was also later deleted.
Here is the video as Selena Gomez reacted to Trump’s immigration policies
Gomez has long been outspoken about immigration issues. She served as an executive producer on the 2019 Netflix documentary Living Undocumented, which profiled the struggles of eight undocumented families living in the US. Her latest emotional reaction aligns with her history of advocating for immigrant rights.
While opinions are still divided, Selena Gomez’s display of emotion sparked conversations around the issues of immigration policies and human implications, reminding everyone of what it is that those people really face through deportations.
