  • Moon Rise Time: Around 7:54 PM in your place. Delhi after 8:15

Much symbolic importance has been attached to rituals that are performed throughout the day. In Nirjala Vrat, women keep fast from sunrise to moonrise without eating or drinking anything. They break this fast only on the onset of the moon appearance and after seeking prayer. Earthen pot or Karwa is an essential part of the rituals, through which water (Argha) is offered to the moon, in worship as well as self-sacrifice.

Story Behind Karwa Chauth:

This festival is deeply associated with many stories. Among these, a few of the most commonly narrated ones include the story of Karva. She was a lady whose devotion had her husband brought back to life from death, after fastening a crocodile to his side with the help of cotton yarn and a prayer to Yama, who is the god of death in hinduism.

Another famous one is the story of Savitri and Satyavan, wherein Yama restored the husband’s life after his wife, Savitri, begged him.

Puja Vidhi:

Women wake up early and have Sargi, a meal offered by the mother-in-law. These will then continue to sustain the woman through her daylong fast. In the evening, they come togher for puja, worshiping Lord Shiva and Parvati, and after puja, offer Argha to the moon when it rises. The fast is only broken after this.

Karwa Chauth has been widely observed in northern India and is often regarded as a festival that ties the marital knot more securely.
