Apple recently took the wraps off the iPhone 16 series. The variants include the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Continuing with its growing presence in India, Apple’s pricing of iPhone 16 series in India is more competitive than its predecessors. The iPhone 16 is priced at ₹79,900, while the 16 Plus will sell for ₹89,900. The prices of its high-end Pro models have been adjusted accordingly. The starting price for the iPhone 16 Pro is ₹1,19,900, and the Pro Max at ₹1,44,900.
This cut in the pricing of iPhone 16 series in India marks Apple’s move to exploit reduced import duties and an expanded local manufacturing operation. For context, this makes the latest lineup around ₹ 15,000 cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro series. Following India’s decision to slash import duties on electronics, this is an extension of the price cuts offered by the company recently on the iPhone 15 Pro variants by 3-4%.
Pricing of the iPhone 16 Pro models in India, however, will be import-based to begin with, before Apple ramps up its production locally. Indeed, India is gaining significance as part of Apple’s global strategy. Revenue rose 42% to $8.7 billion in 2023, making it one of the most substantial markets for the company.
Why is the pricing of iPhone 16 series in India set low?
Pricing of iPhone 16 series in India comes as part of Apple’s broader effort to capture more of the country’s expanding premium smartphone market. In 2023, shipments of iPhones in India surged by 39% to 9.2 million units. It is now the fifth-largest market for Apple worldwide.
On the back of an economic boom and an ever-increasing consumer base, Apple’s market share had reached double digits in Q4 last year. But, it has slightly dipped in the subsequent quarters, according to UBS.
Competitive iPhone 16 India pricing shows Apple’s long-term commitment to growing its leads in the premium smartphone segment in India.
