Huawei launches Mate XT Ultimate Design, gives tough competition to Apple’s iPhone 16

Huawei has just introduced the Mate XT Ultimate Design, an ultra-innovative foldable phone meant to outshine Apple’s iPhone 16. Given the timing of the launch, this seems to be Huawei’s strategic interest in overshadowing Apple, especially in the Chinese market. The competition between both companies is quite sharp.

Apple’s iPhone 16 mainly contains incremental upgrades and enhancements, carrying a similar design language. However, Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design breaks away with its triple-folding display – a radically different idea. This unique feature allows the phone to transform into a gigantic 10.2-inch tablet from a regular-sized device.

Mate XT Ultimate Design allows the users to have triple modes of screen, namely 6.4-inch, 7.9-inch, and 10.2-inch. For that reason, Huawei has provided a flexible hinge system that is capable of bending both inward and outward. The phone is carefully designed to take smooth transitions from one size of screen to another.

The Mate XT Ultimate Design is targeted toward those users who want a compact phone but with a large tablet display. And sure enough, it packs a punch. It has a quad-camera setup headlined by a 50MP camera with OIS and variable aperture, followed by a 12MP ultrawide sensor and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens providing 5.5x optical zoom that should be capable of capturing subjects at quite an impressive distance.

On the front, there is also an 8MP shooter at the center, placed inside a cutout. The phone has abundant 16GB of RAM and it will come in three storage varieties, namely 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The processor, though unknown for the time being, is reportedly high-end.

The device runs on a 5,600mAh battery that lasts a full day quite comfortably with heavy usage. For recharging, Huawei has also bundled support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging for convenience.

The connectivity options available in the Mate XT Ultimate Design include 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and GPS. The side-mounted fingerprint scanner-for convenience-allows one to unlock the device.

Apart from that, some satellite communication and AI-driven tasks are also enabled. As of now, the Mate XT Ultimate Design is available only in the Chinese market. The base model with 256GB is priced at CNY 19,999 ($2,800), while the 1TB model is up for grabs at CNY 23,999 ($3,370). It is offered in two shades: Dark Black and Rui Red.

How to buy Mate XT Ultimate Design?

Pre-orders for the Mate XT Ultimate Design start now, and sales are expected on September 20. For sure, it is now quite crystal clear that Huawei rests its strategy in foldable phones and thus beats Apple to become the leading player in the world’s foldable phone market. With its current market share standing at 27.5%, Huawei already leads the sector.

It’s expected to join the foldable phone fray in 2025, but the early start for Huawei sees it hold a considerable lead for now. The foldable phone market is tipped for considerable growth, with IDC forecasting shipments to hit 25 million units by the end of 2024 and rise further to 45.7 million units by 2028.
