Online gaming rules in India announced as the government moves from a largely unregulated environment to a formal announcement from 1 May 2026. Govt introduce the ban of online games. It introduce new rules and frameworks under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.
Real money games online ban in India
The new rules follow earlier actions against online betting and money-gaming apps. They aim to encourage innovation in e-sports and social games while keeping harmful money games off the market. Officials say the new system seeks to make business easier while ensuring strong consumer protection, covering fair play, data use, accountability, and cybersecurity.
The framework clearly defines entry fees, prizes, and wagers. This clarifies a confusing area that once blurred the line between skill-based games and gambling. It also establishes rules for data retention, cybersecurity, and fair play, and outlines when registrations can be suspended or canceled for violations.
Penalties of 3 year jail and fines in crores
The Act bans online money games and prohibits offering, advertising, or facilitating such services. Penalties can include up to three years in jail and fines amounting to crores of rupees for serious violations. Financial institutions cannot process payments for banned platforms, and authorities can block illegal apps and websites using existing IT powers.
At the center of the changes is the Online Gaming Authority of India, a new regulator that will officially start operating on 1 May 2026 under the IT Ministry. The authority will be led by an additional secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
