Sunjoy Monga, 63, renowned birdman, conservation activist and former mid-day columnist, passed away on 28 May after a war with blood cancer. Among the numerous hats Monga wore, one of his favorites was that of conservationist.
A keen naturalist who wrote about nature and the animal world, Monga initiated an environmental cognizance power, Young Rangers, for schoolchildren throughout India.
Sunjoy Monga die due to blood cancer
Raju Kasambe, former assistant director, training, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and program manager for Lands at The Nature Conservancy said, “He suffered from blood cancer. I consider him from 2008 while he first referred to as me. He was seeking to carry all of the birdwatchers and ornithologists in Mumbai together. He was handling a group referred to as Birds of Mumbai. He began the India Bird Races programme a year ago, and we joined hands to begin it in Nagpur in 2008.”
Gracious gestures
“He travelled in India, however his work in Mumbai. Long when I left BNHS, we stayed in touch over phone calls. He was enough to return to the release of my book at Kitab Khana in Fort. He was recovery then, Rahmani said.
Radhika D’Souza, convener of Nisarg-The Green Club, Royal College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Mira Road said, “Sunjoy Monga Sir work as supporter and mentor for the membership. We have been collaborating in the Bird Races that he organized in Mumbai because of 2009. The books he wrote over time are part of our library and necessary for reading for students and volunteers alike. His handbook, Birds of Mumbai, has been a guide on nature walks by the membership.
