Hyderabad-based pediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh has strongly criticized the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for allowing the disposal of high-sugar “ORS” (Oral Rehydration Solution) drink stocks, calling it a “national shame.” However, in a post, FSSAI denied allowing the sale or disposal of ORSL stocks.
Hyderabad doctor slams FSSAI for ORSL stay
In a video posted on X, Dr. Sivaranjani said, “Why do we suffer in silence? If the same thing happened in the US, the company selling ORS would face millions of lawsuits. Here, it managed to get a stay order with consent. It’s a shame. A stay order to dispose of its stock. It’s high-sugar ORSL. How are we allowing this to happen?”
She was referring to JNTL, the Indian subsidiary of Kenvue, a spin-off of Johnson & Johnson. JNTL reportedly received consent to dispose of its existing stock of the sweetened beverage ORSL after the October 14 advisory that barred non-medical drinks from using the label “ORS.”
No Approval Given for ORSL Sale
FSSAI issued a clarification on social media, said that it has not permitted or consented to the sale or disposal of ORSL. Addressing misinformation online, the food regulator called it a “misrepresentation of facts,” claiming that statements suggesting FSSAI’s approval are false and urged people to refer to the official court order.
