India faces severe diabetes epidemic: Thanks to Samosas and Pizzas

Again known as the “diabetes capital of the world, India faces severe diabetes epidemic, compounded by deteriorating diets. Most of India consumes ultraprocessed and fried foods, including samosas and pizzas.

This, however, was when the research in India took a momentous turn: toward a possibly much-needed solution-the low-AGE diet. This research study, conducted by the Indian Medical Council of Research and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, explored how AGEs might be involved in the onset of risk for diabetes.

AGEs are some of the toxic compounds resulting from cooking at relatively high temperatures when food is cooked. They are commonly found in fried and processed foods. They were thought to cause inflammation, insulin resistance, and several other health problems, so these compounds can be said to predispose one to diabetes.

India Faces Severe Diabetes Epidemic: Low-AGE Diet Helps

The study involved 38 overweight and obese adults aged between 25 and 45 years. The participants were divided into two groups: one on a high-AGE diet and the other on a low-AGE diet. As India faces severe diabetes epidemic, the published results in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition were very encouraging and eye-opening۔

For that reason, the interventions enhanced insulin sensitivity among people who used the treatment, one of the most critical processes in preventing type 2 diabetes. The research also pointed to the fact that people on low-AGE diets retain low blood sugar levels after eating.

The restriction from foods with high AGE levels, including fried foods, baked goods, processed foods, and grilled meats, can reduce people’s levels of AGEs. Other ways through which people could replace such unhealthy practices is by boiling, steaming, and baking foodstuffs to lower their AGE levels.

It means that the outcomes of this study give hope to exposed individuals who might suffer from diabetes. Low in AGE diet may help high-risk diabetic people avoid chronic conditions in their lives.

It is now time that more people should talk about diet and disease prevention in this ongoing battle by India. If food choices are made wisely and better cooking methods are adopted, individuals can do a lot for themselves in the way of improving health.
