At least seven people died, and more than 100 others have been hospitalized in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, over the past few days. This reportedly happened after they drank contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area, according to the Indore mayor on Wednesday.
“Three deaths officially confirmed, but we have also received information about four others,” Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said. He accepted responsibility and promised that strict action taken against senior officials.
7 Dead in Indore due to Contaminated Water
The Mohan Yadav administration has suspended a zonal officer and an assistant engineer in Bhagirathpura immediately. An in-charge sub-engineer also let go.
The Chief Minister expressed condolences and announced financial support of Rs 2 lakh for each bereaved family. The state government will cover the medical expenses for those affected. To handle the influx of patients, the city administration has set aside 100 extra beds at Aurobindo Hospital for Bhagirathpura residents.
Health officials identified three deceased individuals: Nandlal Pal (70), Urmila Yadav (60), and Tara Kori (65), all reportedly dying from diarrhoea. The health department surveyed 2,703 households, examined about 12,000 people, and provided primary treatment to 1,146 patients with mild symptoms. A total of 111 patients with more serious conditions admitted to hospitals, and 18 discharged after treatment.
Patients suffers from the diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration
Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani said, “The patients reported suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration after drinking contaminated water.” Several medical teams and ambulances sent to Bhagirathpura. Indore Authorities have collected water samples for lab testing, and initial assessments indicate a possible mix of drainage water with the drinking water supply.
Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav reported a detected leak in the main water supply pipeline in Bhagirathpura, where a toilet built over the pipe. This issue explored as a possible cause of the contamination. Mayor Bhargava said that strict action taken against any officials found negligent in managing the water infrastructure.
