A step by step guide to open a school in India

open a school in India

How to open a school in India? India has three times as many schools as China. However, many of these schools don’t provide an adequate education.

Education and nurturing of kids is vital to the future of any country. Schools play an important role in this regard. The school is the foundation on which students decide what they want to do in the future. It is a huge responsibility on your shoulders if you plan to open a school. If you want to provide the right education to those students who will brighten the future of this country, you should know the right way to do it.

What are the steps to open a school?

These are some basic steps for opening a school.

1. Develop a blueprint

In order to start a school, the very first step is to plan everything in advance. Plan the first five years of your school’s operation. Decide the location, the faculty, the teaching subjects, etc. A school’s future operations will be guided by this plan. It will serve as a blueprint for future operations.

2. Registration for school

Private organizations are not allowed to open schools in India as per Indian laws to ensure education is not solely for profit.

In India, schools must be organized under the Societies Act of 1860 or by a public trust following the Public Trust Act of each state.

As prescribed by Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013, a private entity can also establish a school in India by setting up a company.

3. School land

The governing body of a school must obtain a NOC from the Department of Education of the state in which the school is located.

Additionally, the government’s purchase of land -for the school – requires a no-objection certificate called an Essentiality Certificate (EC) – which is an essential document certifying the requirements of an institute in that particular zone, and is obtained from the state education department.

It is the Department of Education (DOE) who makes the decision for a school in a particular zone.

The construction must begin within 3 years of receiving the certificate, or else the society has to apply for renewal. The society must also obtain a “letter of sponsorship” from the Department of Energy.

4. Institutional affiliation

For the school affiliation, an online application is required, which can then be submitted for the following:

  • Middle Class Syllabus Approval/Affiliation or Upgradation/Switch to Senior Secondary
  • If a school is already affiliated with CBSE, additional subjects can be added.
  • An already CBSE affiliated school may extend its provisional affiliation up to the secondary or senior secondary level.
  • Non-switchover schools must first affiliate with CBSE up to secondary level and run class IX for a minimum of one year before applying for Senior Secondary Upgrade.
  • The affiliate fee paid by online banking, debit card, credit card, or NEFT.
  • The deadline for submitting an application is 30th June of the year in which class VII, IX, XI is proposed to be started.
  • Students must affiliate with the Board before starting classes.
  • If a school missed the extension deadline last year, it can apply this year with a late fee.
  • Schools (applying late) who submit their applications in January will be charged a late fee of Rs 20000, however, from 1 February on, the late fee will be Rs 100000.

After the application submitted, an inspection committee comes to perform the detailed inspection matching the norms and conditions, and upon satisfaction with the facilities, school affiliation is finally granted.

5. Licenses and documents required

The law takes precedence in India when a school is established. When a society formed, it must have a Memorandum of Association, along with other documents.

  • Certificate of Essentiality DoE
  • MCD/DOE Recognition Certificate
  • Certificate of DoE Upgrading
  • CBSE Affiliation Certificate

  • The water board’s report on water testing
  • Certificate of Completion DDA
  • DoE Scheme of Management duly approved
  • No loan certificate issued by the bank for the FD
  • Landlord’s Permitted Certificate (if rented)

6. Submission of Documents

  • Association Memorandum
  • Affidavits of members of the society
  • Deposit of Rs. 2 lakhs into the Reserve Fund from the bank
  • An affidavit from the management in accordance with Delhi School Education Rules, 1973
  • Taking responsibility for fees and other charges
  • Details of all members of the society
  • A description of the land and building

  • Education experience of society/members

There are too many documents to handle

Ultimately, there are a number of formalities, clearances, and certifications that needs completion as part of opening a school, and failing to obtain either of these documents would ruin your dream of starting a school.

7. Hiring qualified employees

Name your school’s head and your business manager. Recruit and interview candidates for the office, choose subject-matter experts as teachers, and hire full-time maids, etc.

8. Marketing strategies

Set up a website and a mailing list to keep interested parents updated about your school’s progress. Moreover, advertise your school in newspapers, brochures, hoardings, banners, etc.

9. Pre-launch

Open your school’s office after promoting it and begin admission interviews. Also, plan curriculum, teaching strategies, buy teaching aids, etc., with the help of your appointed teachers.

10. Ceremonial opening

Before or after one week from the start of the school session, you can arrange a formal opening ceremony that will be a festive event. You should prepare a welcome speech speaking about your school’s goals and how it will benefit the society. Host a feast for your guests.

Conclusion

It’s not easy to start a new school. The process also involves a great deal of paperwork as well as a great deal of research. You can surely find a school that thrives on the standards that you have set if you do your homework properly. Also, remember that building a school is not just a dream that you need to realize. You should ensure that the students who get admission to your school get the right kind of education and development. Schools are also in high demand, but parents still search for the best schools for their children before anything else.
