The disaster management teams in Odisha are on high alert due to a developing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. This storm expected to bring heavy rainfall to the state starting on October 27. Although the cyclone not predicted to make direct landfall in Odisha, it still cause widespread rain and strong winds.
Cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari assured that the state ready for the cyclonic storm, which is expected to arrive around October 22 or 29. He confirmed that the health, water, resource, and energy departments prepared to respond.
“Odisha is very vulnerable to natural disasters like heavy rainfall, flooding, river swelling, and cyclones. We are preparing for the cyclonic storm predicted to hit our coast on the 22nd or 29th. Departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture fully prepared. Local administrations across Odisha, especially in at-risk areas, have set up relief centers, evacuation plans, and supply provisions. We urge people not to panic; we are fully prepared,” he said.
Heavy rains starts from 27 October
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) identified a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal on October 24. The system expected to develop into a depression by October 25, deepen into a deep depression by October 26, and become a cyclonic storm over the west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal by October 27.
Meteorologists predict that the storm will likely move toward the coast of Andhra Pradesh. In Odisha, heavy rainfall expected in the coastal and southern districts from October 27 to October 29. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the entire state, with some areas preparing for extremely heavy rain. Squally weather expected along the south Odisha coast, with wind speeds of 40-50 km/h and gusts reaching up to 60 km/h starting October 27.
