Heavy rainfall in Bengaluru over the weekend brought the Silicon Valley of India to a standstill. Severe waterlogging and flooding in lots of low-lying regions left cars stranded, with main roads to vehicles queuing up. Several tree branches also fell.
Sai Layout in the town continues to resemble an island, as there is no way for water to get away. However, before Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s visit to Sai Layout, efforts were ramped up to clear silt and fill potholes.
Water accumulate in Bengaluru up to 4 Ft
The water had accumulated up to a few to 4 ft in the Sai Layout area. While the water has predominantly receded, it remains stagnant on the streets. Efforts are to pump out the water and get rid of silt and debris from the road and nearby drains.
However, citizens know that this is not an permanent solution to the recurring problem. A large spell of rain will yet again expose the reality of the city, especially in this location. The residents of Sai Layout and other low-lying regions are searching for a permanent solution.
Over the past few days, they witnessed damage to their furniture, electric home equipment, and assets. While a few people moved to hotels and their relatives, many stayed back due to lack of options.
Water Pumped and streets cleaned for Chief Minister Visit
Visuals from components of Bengaluru showed the depth of harm caused by the heavy downpour. People had been seen wading through knee-deep water. The affected districts include Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Belagavi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Davanagere, and Chitradurga. Sai Layout and the Horamavu locality had been among the worst-affected areas.
The rain took five lives in the city. Two people – Manmohan Kamath (63) and Dinesh (12) – had been electrocuted while looking to drain rainwater that had entered an apartment in the city, police said.
