Delhi Police Calms Fears Over Routine Missing Persons Reports

Days after data showed that over 800 people went missing in the national capital during the first half of January, the Delhi Police aimed to ease public concerns. They said that there is “no cause for panic or fear” since the numbers actually reflect a decrease compared to the same time in previous years.

Delhi Police said no need to panic over missing person reports

According to official data, a total of 807 people reported missing in Delhi from January 1 to January 15, which averages about 54 cases per day. Of these, 509 were women and girls, while 298 were men. The data also indicated that 191 of the missing persons were minors and 616 were adults.

In an official statement, the police mentioned that while the data accurately recorded, January 2026 saw a drop in missing persons reports compared to earlier years. However, the police did not provide month-by-month comparative figures in their statement.

Follow transparent and fair crime reporting policy

The Delhi Police said they follow a transparent and fair crime reporting policy. Under this policy, all missing persons complaints quickly registered and investigated. Officials pointed out that reports filed not just at local police stations but also through online platforms and the Emergency Response Support System (112), making it easier for the public to access help.

“Standard operating procedures strictly followed in all missing persons cases. Immediate efforts made to find the missing individual, and cases involving children get the highest priority,” the statement said. To improve investigations, dedicated missing persons teams set up in all districts of the city. The police added that the Anti Human Trafficking Unit from the Crime Branch involved in handling cases of missing persons, especially those involving children, to ensure quick recovery.
