Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday asked officials to find sites for shipyards to boost water passenger transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This effort aims to support the local construction of boats needed for the “Water Metro” project. He spoke during a meeting to review the government’s water transport initiatives.

The CM stressed that boats for water transport built in Maharashtra’s shipyards. He directed the administration to build the country’s largest shipyard facility while maintaining quality standards. The second phase of the project will focus on carrying out these manufacturing plans.
About project
The Mumbai Water Metro Project seeks to create a smooth, sustainable, and affordable transport system through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, as per government statement. It plans for 11 new waterways and 24 new terminals (215 km), along with modernizing 21 existing routes and 20 terminals (125 km), for a total network of 340 km across the MMR. It is expected to carry 7.5 crore passengers annually by 2031.
The government report says private operators will manage 207 Electric/Hybrid vessels at an estimated cost of Rs 3,156 crore. The Maharashtra Maritime Board’s investment in infrastructure development projected to be Rs 3,436 crore.
