Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the Jal Jeevan Mission extension till December 2028. It increase the budget to Rs 8.7 lakh crore for the rural drinking water supply project. It shift from building infrastructure to providing services.
Cabinet Approves Extension of Jal Jeevan Mission
Modi launched the project in 2019 and offers safe and sufficient drinking water through tap connections to all rural households. He noted that the Cabinet’s decision emphasizes service delivery to citizens instead of just infrastructure, supported by strong local governance and digital monitoring.
“This move will strengthen water security, improve health outcomes, and empower rural communities, especially our Nari Shakti,” he said on social media. Union Minister AshwiniVaishnaw announced this decision during the Cabinet briefing.
Mission Launched in 2019 to Provide Tap Water
The Cabinet approved the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s plan to change the implementation of the JalJeevan Mission (JJM) from infrastructure creation to service delivery, with a focus on drinking water governance and a framework for sustainable rural pipe supply. To restructure JJM, the Cabinet raised the total budget to Rs 8.69 lakh crore, with central assistance increasing to Rs 3.59 lakh crore, compared to Rs 2.08 lakh crore approved in 2019-20.
