India Reaffirms Stance Against Illegal migration: MEA Clarifies Policy

The Ministry of External Affairs of India (MEA) has reiterated the country’s strong condemnation of illegal migration, also highlighting the nexus between such migration and organized crime (sic). MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced during a briefing that residents of India stranded out of the country without proper paperwork will be brought back, subject to nationality documents being validated. This key policy, which prioritizes legality and safety, highlights India’s commitment to combating illegal migration.

Indian nationals in the US or any other country overstaying or are undocumented will be repatriated, provided the necessary documentation is provided,” said Jaiswal, also emphasizing that it is based on valid verification. This assertion arose in the context of the debate over the management of illegal immigrants in the US, and Jaiswal pointed out that at this stage, any numerical estimation of those directly affected would be inaccurate.

Asked about the effect such actions may have on the trade and industrial relations between India and the US, Jaiswal explained that crime related to illegal migration and trade are two different affairs. “Our policy on illegal migration is unequivocal—India opposes it, particularly due to its association with organized crime,” he asserted, separating economic cooperation from security concerns.

Jaiswal further remarked on the same Foreign Secretary-led visit by Vikram Misri to China scheduled to be held from January 26-27. While traveling, Misri will talk with his Chinese counterpart on matters of bilateral importance. This visit is based on earlier high-level interactions and understandings, for the purpose of dealing with issues and promoting bilateral interaction between the two countries.

This dialogue is the result of the consensus arrived in Kazan based on the follow-up dialogues, which involve meetings at the special representatives and foreign minister levels”, Jaiswal continued, presenting a full and final statement post-discussion.

India’s proactive response to the problem of illegal migration represents the country’s commitment to lawful international relations, at the same time maintaining a strong economic and diplomatic engagement all over the world.
