Indian-origin doctor among two killed in UAE light aircraft crash

A tragic light aircraft crash off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE claimed the lives of two people, including 26-year-old Indian-origin doctor Sulaymaan Al Majid. The accident happened on Sunday and both the co-pilot and the pilot, aged 26 and a Pakistani, died, confirmed a statement by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Sulaymaan, a native of the UAE, had hired the glider to take the glider sightseeing flight with his family. In fact, his parents and brother were present at the aviation club to see him take off and then return back once again. According to reports, his brother was scheduled to take the next flight after him.

How did UAE aircraft crash happen?

The plane crashed just minutes after takeoff near the Cove Rotana Hotel along the beach. Initial investigations suggest the aircraft lost radio contact and later attempted an emergency landing. However, both occupants succumbed to their injuries despite resuscitation efforts, the GCAA said.

The family is devastated by the loss. Speaking with Khaleej Times, Sulaymaan’s father described the unimaginable grief the family is enduring. “We were looking forward to celebrating New Year’s together as a family. Instead, our lives have been torn apart. Sulaymaan was the light of our lives, and we don’t know how to move forward without him.

Who was Sulaymaan Al Majid?

Sulaymaan was a clinical fellow at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. His LinkedIn profile indicates that he was very active with the British Medical Association (BMA), where he lobbied for fair pay and worked to have “junior doctors” classified as “resident doctors.”

The GCAA has opened an investigation into the cause of the crash, and a detailed report is expected in the coming weeks.

The incident has left the local community in shock, especially since the tragedy occurred during what was supposed to be a fun family outing.
