India's most massive hack unfolds: Star Health data sold for $43k to Chinese hacker

One of the India’s most massive hack has been felt after the Star Health Insurance faced history’s unprecedented hacking. Around 31 million rows of sensitive information which include names, addresses, PAN cards details and salary of an Indian citizen have been leaked. A hacker claims to claim that the CISO of the company sold it for $43,000. This is considered to be one of the largest hacks in India’s history.

The India’s most massive hack ever saw was reported by the hacker, xenZen, who has claimed that the CISO of Star Health, Amarjeet Khurana, initiated this illegal transaction through an encrypted chat app. Negotiations began in July when the hacker paid $28,000 in cryptocurrency to purchase customer data. However, that wasn’t even the end of it.

India’s most massive hack: More data sold for $15k in another transaction

Already, claims data was sold for a further $15,000 in a second transaction. Shocking collaboration seems to have peeped into the deep vulnerability existing within corporate data handling.

Even worse is what follows. After accessing 5 terabytes of data, xenZen’s access was revoked and the CISO demanded $150,000, apparently to cover management’s share. He rejected this, and by late September, the leak became public through the starhealthleak website, where data is being sold for $150,000.

The breach affects millions while communicating the truth that corporate greed can make ordinary citizens reap havoc.

India’s most massive hack, Star Health Insurance has tried to contain the damage with legal threats against Telegram and Cloudflare, both hosting servers of leaked data. It initiated a forensic investigation. However, by this time, any damage had been done and the trust taken in the data security of India had suffered significantly.

This incident is termed to be India’s biggest hack. Personal information can very easily be on the selling block without any consequence; this leaves millions vulnerable and raises voices for stricter data protection laws in the country.
