India’s fair trade regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), announced on Thursday that it will look into the recent wave of flight cancellations by IndiGo across several routes, as part of its competition laws. This decision comes amid significant disruptions in the aviation sector that have affected passengers nationwide.
In an official statement, the CCI mentioned that it has taken note of complaints filed against IndiGo related to the recent flight disruptions on various routes. “Based on the initial assessment, the Commission has decided to proceed further in the matter according to the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002,” the regulator said, according to the news agency.
Huge IndiGo flights cancellations trigger scrutiny
IndiGo, which holds over 65 percent of the domestic aviation market, canceled hundreds of flights starting December 2. These cancellations caused major inconvenience for thousands of passengers, many of whom faced delays, rebookings, and last-minute travel uncertainty.
The extent of the disruptions has raised concerns in some circles about whether the airline’s dominant market position contributed to the situation.
DGCA probe and competition concerns
While the aviation safety regulator DGCA is already investigating the flight disruptions and has increased oversight of IndiGo operations, concerns related to competition have also gained attention.
A senior official informed the news agency PTI last week that the CCI was looking into whether IndiGo may have broken competition rules.
