Authorities in Jammu demolished the family home of a journalist on Thursday, November 27. This journalist had connected a police officer to suspected drug smugglers arrested in a major cross-border trafficking operation earlier this month.
The J and K administration denied claims that they were selectively targeting journalist Arfaz Ahmad Daing. His family home destroyed on Thursday morning with a heavy police and paramilitary presence.

A senior police officer in J&K rejected Daing’s allegations against a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) who serving as the sub-divisional police officer for Jammu (East) and was transferred on October 26. During a broadcast on News Sehar India, a local digital platform with nearly half a million social media followers, Daing praised the new DSP who led the team that uncovered the drug operation.
“There is something going on between the two officers,” the police officer overseeing the drug investigation said. He wished to remain anonymous and did not provide further details. “We will investigate it.”
Daing family homeless
A source revealed that the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) sent the demolition order to the police around 10 pm on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, three to four heavy excavators arrived in Jammu Channi to demolish the single-story building. This action left Daing’s family, including his old age parents, his wife, and their three children, homeless.
In an interview with The Wire, Daing admitted that the house built on JDA land. However, he noted that the house registered in the name of his father, Ghulam Qadir, who constructed it about 40 years ago.
Daing alleged that the J&K high court instructed the JDA to remove encroachments in certain areas of Jammu, but that no action taken against influential people.
