Justice for trainee doctor: 50 senior doctors resign from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

Fifty senior doctors resign from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, heightening a huge protest on October 8. The crisis of this high-profile resignation step after step is taken to support the junior doctors fighting for justice for an alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Shock waves of such mass resignation have created waves in the medical community regarding safety and transparency within the healthcare system.

Earlier, 15 of the senior physicians joined their junior counterparts in a symbolic hunger strike. Just as the senior physicians walked out, videos of their resignations were going viral on social media where students gave them rounds of applause. The visuals captured the poignant moment of unity as medical professionals stood together for a cause.

One of the senior doctors expressed frustration over unsafe working conditions. Their resignation speaks volumes about the need for urgency in these concerns. “Would you want your children to work in an environment like that?” one of the doctors reacted on social media, referring to the collective viewpoint of their peers. A comment came in saying, “If this doesn’t move you, nothing will.”.

Senior doctors resign from RG Kar Medical College, junior doctors on hunger strike

While the senior doctors resign from RG Kar Medical College, junior doctors have been on hunger strike since Saturday, demanding a safer environment at work. The campus has been branded infested with a “corruption-threat syndicate.” With immediate safety, a network of referrals and bed availability in hospitals across West Bengal also figure in their wish list.

The young doctors demand beefed-up security either in the form of permanent female police officers or increased police patrolling on campus. They have expressed dissatisfaction with the existing cases of staff shortages within the hospital that affect the smooth running of its activities.

The inaction of the authorities has exasperated the senior doctors to the extent that they had to issue a joint statement condemning the prevailing situation. They term the situation as “impending health disaster” and urge “urgent reforms.” However, these doctors’ resignation is not an immediate crisis. They have also aimed for an opportunity for a safer and friendlier health scenario in West Bengal.
