A 32-year-old laborer died after falling into an open manhole on vacant Delhi Development Authority (DDA) land in Rohini. This incident marked the second fatality in the capital within five days. According to the Delhi Police, they received a PCR call at 2:36 PM on Tuesday, reporting a missing person who was believed to have fallen into a sewer. Police teams quickly responded to the scene.

The caller, Amir Hussain from Bihar’s Darbhanga district, informed the police that his friends, Birju Kumar Rai (32) from Samastipur and Budhan Das alias Suraj (33) from Madhubani, both laborers, had drunk alcohol on Monday night. Around 7:30 PM, while they were returning to their nearby jhuggi, Birju reportedly lost his balance and fell into the open manhole.
Police noted that Budhan Das did not notify anyone right away because he was drunk. He only contacted Amir Hussain after he regained his senses the next afternoon, which led to the PCR call.
People accused police response time for another death
After getting this information, the Delhi police alerted the DDA, Fire Brigade, and other relevant agencies, starting the rescue operations. The victim removed from the manhole with the Fire Brigade’s assistance and taken to the hospital, where he was announced dead.
Local residents criticized the response time. Sunil Kumar, who was at the scene, said the man had fallen into the open drain during the night and that the administration was informed later. Another local, Tejpal Yadav, claimed officials only acted after the emergency call was made, asserting that the man had been in the pit since the day before.
Police said that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. After recovering the body, the open manhole was covered.
