Several hotel associations across India have reported a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders just days after the prices of both commercial and domestic gas cylinders increased nationwide. Hotel associations in Bengaluru and Chennai raised alarms, warning that restaurants in these cities might have to stop operations on Tuesday, March 10, if the LPG supply not restored.
LPG Shortage Threatens Hotels
This situation arises amid rising oil prices worldwide due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, which has triggered unrest across the Middle East. The conflict raises concerns about a further increase in energy prices, especially with Iran’s threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane through which a 5th of the world’s oil is transported.
Bengaluru, Chennai eateries shut down
The Chennai Hotels Association and the Bangalore Hotels Association said that the supply of commercial LPG to restaurants in both citiessignificantly affected. “Since the gas supply stopped, the hotels closed from tomorrow,” the association in Bengaluru said.
They also noted that the disruption could affect common people, students, and medical professionals who rely on hotels for daily meals. The Chennai hotels association made a similar statement, calling for PM Modi help. “Commercial LPG distributors have completely stopped supplying cylinders, saying they have no stock available. As a result, many restaurants forced to shut down,” they tweeted.
