Mamata Banerjee Govt suspends 4 officers in Bengal electoral roll revision row

The Mamata Banerjee government has suspended four officials. According to sources, they accused of including names of fake voters in the electoral roll and mishandling data security. This action follows the Election Commission of India’s order on August 5 for the state to suspend two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant EROs. The order also called for filing FIRs against them and a data entry operator.

Four officials have been suspended. No FIR filed against them yet,” said a source. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier challenged the ECI’s power to issue orders to the state government. She said that she would not penalize the officers involved and support them.

Officers Punished involve in Bengal electoral roll revision row

“Government officers were threatened. Yesterday, two of my officers suspended. The state told to file FIRs against them. Has the election announced? Under what law are you (ECI) giving us orders? I won’t do this. I won’t punish them,” Mamata Banerjee said at a political rally two days after the August 5 announcement.

The state government maintained its position and removed two of the five individuals identified by the ECI from their election-related roles. The poll panel summoned the state’s chief secretary to Delhi and set a new deadline for the state government.
