MEA shares the data of over 2 lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in 2024. MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh shared the data in response to a question on renouncement of Indian citizenship in Rajya Sabha. Here are the number Indians who gave citizenship in previous years

The Ministry of External Affairs requested if it was aware that there was an upward number in the amount of Indians gave up in Indian citizenship. However, the records shared in response to the question showed that there was no linear growth in the range of those who gave up their Indian citizenship that 2019.
The figure of 2,06,378 Indians in 2024 is decrease than the data recorded in 2023 and 2022, however is higher than that in 2021, 2020 and 2019.
How Indian citizenship is renounced
The MEA requested if it undertakes a through inspection before acceding to the request of giving up Indian citizenship. In response, it precise the procedure under which it is easy to gave up the citizenship.
After this, their passport and different information are verified, upon which the documents sent to relevant authorities departments for their responses, to submitted in 30 days.
Once the details of the statement made by the applicant are verified, the renunciation certificates accepted online after 30 days of acknowledgement.
