The Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir is the biggest railway bridge. It inaugurate by PM Modi on Friday. The project is part of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) and was approved in 2003. One of the main individuals in the successful production of the bridge is Professor G Madhavi Latha. A professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, she was spend 17 years in the Chenab Bridge project as a geotechnical representative.
G Madhavi Latha worked carefully with Afcons, the contractor of the bridge, in the planning, design, and production of structure, focusing on the boundaries posed by the terrain.
Who Is G Madhavi Latha?
She is currently a HAG professor at IISc. Dr Latha finished her B.Tech in Civil Engineering in 1992 from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. She win a gold medal as an M.Tech student at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal. Her specialisation is in Geotechnical Engineering. Dr Latha completed her doctorate from IIT-Madras in 2000 in Geotechnical Engineering.
Role In Chenab Bridge Project
The difficult topography, climate conditions remote area of the Chenab Bridge make construction a difficult project in the city. G Madhavi Latha team adopted a “design-as-you-move approach” to conquer all barriers. This supposed innovating in real-time based on geological conditions which include fractured rocks, hidden cavities, and ranging rock houses, which have been not apparent in early surveys.
The team performed complex calculations and design modifications to works around the real rock mass situations they located in the course of the construction. Dr Latha’s contributions covered advice at the design and placement of rock anchors to enhance balance.
