The VB-G RAM G Bill, which replaces the 20-year-old MGNREGA passed in Parliament during the recent Winter Session amid loud protests from the Opposition. The new act offers 125 days of wage employment for rural workers.
Congress launch MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan campaign
At a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, December 27, 2025, after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Mr. Kharge announced that the party would lead the ‘MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan’ across the country.
He said that MGNREGA is not just a program but the ‘Right to Work’ protected by the Constitution. “People are angry over the repeal of MGNREGA; the government will have to face the consequences,” he said.
“At the CWC meeting, we took an oath to launch a campaign centered on MGNREGA. The Congress will take the lead and kick off the ‘MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan’ on January 5,” Mr. Kharge mentioned.

Addressing the cost-sharing clause between the Centre and state governments in the VB-G RAM G Act, the Congress leader pointed out that states would incur additional expenses. He criticized the decision as one-sided and made without consultation. This law introduced to crush the poor; we fight against it in the streets and in Parliament,” he said.
Mr. Kharge emphasized that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was a visionary piece of legislation from the UPA government and received global praise. The scheme named after Mahatma Gandhi due to its significant impact. “Repealing MGNREGA is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi,” he remarked, describing it as an attack on the Right to Work.
