PM Narendra Modi launched several development projects worth around Rs 36,000 crore in Purnea district, Bihar, on Monday. He also opened a new terminal building at Purnea airport, which will improve passenger capacity in the region.
Modi flagged off the first flight on the Purnea-Kolkata route. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, and various union and state ministers, along with MPs and MLAs, attended the event.

Modi laid the foundation stone for a 3×800 MW thermal power plant valued at Rs 25,000 crore in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur. This marks the largest private sector investment in the state. It is designed with low-emission, ultra-supercritical technology. The project will supply dedicated power and enhance Bihar’s energy security, as stated by a senior official.
The PM also laid the cornerstone for Phase 1 of the Kosi-Mechi Intra-State River Link Project, which is worth over Rs 2,680 crore. He said, “It will focus on upgrading a canal by doing desilting, reconstructing damaged structures, and renovating the settling basin, and also increasing its discharge capacity from 15,000 to 20,000 cusecs.” The project will help multiple districts in northeastern Bihar by expanding irrigation, controlling floods, and improving agricultural resilience, according to the official.
Rail projects inaugurated in Bihar
During the day, the PM Modi inaugurated various rail projects and flagged off several trains in Bihar. He laid the foundation stones for the rail line between Bikramshila and Katareah, which costs over Rs 2,170 crore and will provide direct connectivity across the Ganga River.

He also inaugurated a new rail line between Arariya and Galgalia, built at a cost of Rs 4,410 crore. The PM flagged off a train in the Araria-Galgalia (Thakurganj) section, creating direct rail access between the Araria and Kishanganj districts that improves travel in northeastern Bihar.
He launched the Vande Bharat Express train between Jogbani and Danapur, benefiting districts such as Araria, Purnea, Madhepura, Saharsa, Khagaria, Begusarai, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Patna.
