Modi Launches Assam Projects, Gives Tea Workers Land Rights

Prime Minister Modi said that granting land ownership rights to Assam tea garden workers. It is his way of repaying a debt to the community. PM handed out land pattas to tea garden workers. This marked an important milestone for a community that has lived and worked in tea estates for generations.

“Respecting and honoring tea garden workers feels like repaying a debt for me,” Modi said. “The tea grown by these workers has traveled across the country, even reaching Gujarat, where I once sold tea. Today, I have the chance to serve the very community that shaped that journey,” he added.

This initiative is expected to improve housing security and access to welfare programs. It will also help tea workers access institutional credit and other financial benefits. Speaking at the event, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma noted that the land patta distribution fulfills a long-standing wish of the tea garden community.

Family security of tea workers ensured

“When the Assam tea industry reaches 200 years, it is essential for the workers who built this industry to receive land rights. Today, tea garden workers are receiving land pattas, ensuring dignity and security for their families,” Sarma said.

He also mentioned that the state government has introduced various welfare initiatives for tea workers. These include job reservations in government positions and medical colleges, improved drinking water access, better roads in tea labor lines, and expanded educational opportunities for their children. Nearly seven lakh tea garden workers have received financial help under the EtiKoliDutiPaat scheme.
