Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Manipur Police headquarters, which costs ₹101 crore, and a ₹538 crore civil secretariat. These projects are part of 17 initiatives totaling ₹1,200 crore that he will announce during his visit to the troubled state today, 13 September.
Modi visit Manipur first time after 2003
According to a government statement, Narendra Modi will also lay the foundation stones for 14 projects worth ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur. This will be his first visit to Manipur since violence broke out there two years ago.
Manipur has been under the Governor’s rule since February. The state has faced severe ethnic violence for more than two years, resulting in the deaths of at least 260 people and displacing about 50,000 others. The conflicts started between the Meitei and Kuki communities, but have now spread to almost every group in the region.
Modi Launches ₹7,300 Crore Projects
According to the schedule, Narendra Modi will arrive in Churachandpur from Aizawl in Mizoram on Saturday and then head to Imphal. He lay the foundation stone for various development projects worth over ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur at around 12:30 PM. He will also speak to the crowd during this event.
Churachandpur and Imphal have been the hardest-hit areas during the ethnic clashes in Manipur. On Thursday, Churachandpur saw new clashes, and unidentified individuals reportedly vandalized decorations set up for Modi’s visit.
For infrastructure development projects, ₹142 crore is allocated for working-women hostels at nine locations, and ₹105 crore is designated for super specialty and healthcare in remote and hill districts. Modi will also lay foundation stones for infrastructure improvements in and around Polo Ground worth ₹30 crore, and he will invest ₹134 crore to strengthen 120 schools across all 16 districts.
