On January 16, on a freezing winter night shrouded in heavy fog, Yuvraj Mehta drowned in Noida’s Sector 150. His car fell into an unmarked water-filled ditch on a construction site next to the road. This road had no streetlights to alert drivers about the unsafe 90-degree left turn. Now month later, on the night of February 5, when most of Delhi stayed warm under blankets, Kamal died when his motorcycle fell into a pit dug for construction work by the Delhi Jal Board.
This pit was left open without guardrails or barriers, leading to the accident. The similarities between these two incidents have sparked a political uproar. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized the ruling BJP. On X, Bharadwaj, whose AAP faced a heavy loss in last year’s Delhi election said, “Shocking… the BJP government in Delhi has learned nothing from the Noida incident…”

The Delhi government responded quickly. Home Minister Ashish Sood expressed he was “deeply hurt” and said, “Instructions for investigation of the incident have been issued…”
What happened in Noida?
Yuvraj was less than a kilometer from his home in Tata Eureka Park when the tragedy occurred. He lost control of his Grand Vitara car near the last turn on the road to his house, likely due to low visibility. The car went off the road and fell into a ditch at a construction site.
Reports say the ditch was being dug for the basement of an upcoming project. Yuvraj called his father for help right away. For the next 90 minutes, he waited desperately, but help never arrived.
Despite crowds gathering at the accident site, which included some emergency personnel, the darkness, cold, and fear of injury kept rescuers from acting until Mehta drowned.
