Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually launch the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana. It is a economic empowerment program in Bihar, on September 26. The Bihar cabinet approved the scheme on August 29. It aims to uplift women by providing initial financial support of Rs 10,000 to start or expand their businesses.
A total of ₹7,500 crore will be directly sent to 75 lakh eligible women through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be the chief guest at the event in Patna.
How the Mahila Rozgar Yojana works
Under this scheme, one woman from each eligible household will receive Rs 10,000 in the first phase. This money can be used to start small businesses such as tailoring, animal husbandry, farming, handicrafts, or local trade.
If successful, women can receive additional support of up to Rs 2 lakh in six months to help grow their businesses. The scheme targets rural and urban poor families, with eligibility criteria set to support those in need.
Widespread participation across Bihar
The response to the Mahila Rozgar Yojana has been strong. 1.07 crore rural women have already applied, while 4.66 lakh urban women have submitted applications. Over 1.4 lakh women have also newly applied to join Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to become eligible. The program is run through JEEViKA, Bihar’s rural livelihood initiative, ensuring it reaches deep into communities.
