A official proposal submitted to the Maharashtra government. It requests that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project opened only for passenger vehicles during the first six months after completion.
Planning to limit usage of Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link
This request stems from concerns about safety and traffic management. The Missing Link section, which includes long tunnels and complex engineering expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune. However, officials worry that allowing all types of vehicles, especially heavy transport, from the beginning could cause operational problems.
Sources say the proposal stresses the need for a controlled launch during the early stages. Limiting access to cars, SUVs, and light motor vehicles for the first six months would let authorities monitor traffic patterns, assess how well the infrastructure works, and make adjustments to safety measures.
Maharashtra government receive the request
Letters regarding this request sent to CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and MSRTC Vice Chairman Anil Gaikwad. The message urges the state to prioritize commuter safety and ensure smoother operations before allowing heavy vehicles like trucks and buses.
Supporters of the proposal believe the initial phase will be crucial for evaluating tunnel ventilation systems, emergency response plans, and overall traffic behavior on the new route. They argue that a gradual introduction could help prevent congestion and reduce the risk of accidents.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project is one of the most ambitious infrastructure improvements in Maharashtra. It is expected to significantly shorten travel time while steering clear of accident-prone ghat areas. The state government has not yet reached a final decision on the proposal.
