Punjab Floods: 2 Central Teams Evaluate Damage, Current Situation is Serious

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Amritsar and Gurdaspur in flood-hit Punjab on Thursday. He said that two central teams are assessing the Punjab Floods damage in the state and described the current situation as serious.

Chouhan assured that the central government supports the farmers and residents of Punjab. “The situation is serious. The floods have destroyed crops. 1,400 villages are badly affected. The Centre has sent two teams to assess the damage. The state government will also conduct an assessment. I have come here at the direction of the Prime Minister. In this hard time, we stand with the farmers and public of Punjab,” he told.

Minister visit the affected areas of Punjab Floods

The Minister visited affected areas in Amritsar district, meeting with local residents and listening to their concerns. He inspected crops damaged by waterlogging due to continuous heavy rains and spoke with farmers.

The state government announced that around 37 lives lost due to the severe flooding. According to the Punjab government, 1,655 villages have been impacted. Gurdaspur is most affected area, with 324 villages impacted by the floods, followed by Ferozepur (111), Amritsar (190), Hoshiarpur (121), Kapurthala (123), and Sangrur (107). Approximately 175,216 hectares of cropland affected.

Punjab Police, NDRF and other teams provide sufficient support

To address the severe flooding, the government has increased rescue and relief operations across the state. Punjab Police are using drones to deliver aid to flood-hit villages in Amritsar, trying to reach areas like Ajnala. In other parts of the Punjab Floods state, evacuation drives carried out in villages along the Sutlej River, where residents were asked to move to relief camps established by the government. Meanwhile, authorities conducted a surprise visit to Derabassi in Mohali to evaluate the emergency preparedness of the local administration.
